Tukongote Community Projects
In 2019 we sponsored the creation of Big Tree Preschool in rural Zambia. This year they will receive a perimeter fence to protect the buildings and allow the inclusion of a teaching vegetable garden, sandpit and playground.
The purchase of a professional hammer mill will enable Tukongote to grind locally-grown corn into maize meal. They will also buy any excess corn from locals for school and staff feeding programmes and the milled grain will be of higher nutritional value than the more refined maize bought currently.
Tukongote’s community projects and schools have been seriously impacted by a lack of tourists to Zambia, as they usually rely on funding from international guests visiting the adjoining lodge. The lodge closed in March 2020 and whilst it has now reopened, tourist numbers are still limited. Our grant will help subsidise project and overhead costs until a steady flow of tourists return.
